Release tools, are you prepared?

You've filled your tank, loaded your boat with your favorite baits, a cooler with snacks. You are ready. You finally get to your favorite spot, rig up that favorite lure and begin to cast. For most muskie anglers this is the norm. Often release tools aren't thought about until you have a big muskie on the business end of your line. The first thing you should do when you get to that fishing spot is make sure you have all of your release tools out or in an easily accessible location.

For me, I double up on everything. I usually carry two pairs of long needle nose pliers. Two jaw spreaders, two pairs of hook cutters. When it comes to these fish they can get quite worked up and the slightest thrash in a net can send a pair of pliers to the bottom of the lake. This won't do you or the fish any good. Which is why I double up! As far as hook cutters go, any hook cutter of good quality will suffice. I do suggest knipex. They are modestly priced for the piece of mind that is offered knowing they will cut through your hook, every time!

Another tip, make sure your fishing partner knows where your release tools are before you head out. This way if you are relying on help, less time is spent trying to figure out where tools are. Remember, your muskie has a higher survival rate when released if minimal stress is placed on it. So do yourself and your fish a favor. Make sure before each outing that you are prepared. Have your release tools ready to go and in good working order!

Keep that lure in the water!
