Big Muskies - What's the secret?

Everyone wants to catch big muskies. With catch & release being what it is these days thanks to early pioneers, we have the opportunity to catch more large muskies than ever before. Grandpa put it best, "the good ole days are now"!

From television hosts, to famous fishing personalities you always seem to see these folks putting a decent number of large fish in the boat. What is the secret? Keep reading and find out...

If you look back to my previous blog where I discuss the wide variety of baits available to today's muskie angler one might think, "this is going to be rough". Quite the contrary it's simpler than you think and it doesn't take a million dollars in tackle to do. First, you must define to yourself what a "big" muskie is. Second, you have to have confidence! Time and time again in different seminars and on TV, you usually hear the word confidence brought up. It does play a tremendous part. If you don't have confidence in something you won't have the mind set you need to produce. Third, learn the muskie! There is a plethora of information available on the world wide web these days about muskies. A good portion of information can be obtained from your local DNR biologist. Read as much as you can to learn the habits of the muskie. Last and more often than not, the most overlooked, learn the muskies prey!!!

A muskie is a predator. The baddest fish in the valley! It is also a simple creature in the sense that it swims, eats and makes baby muskies! If you know the habits of what muskies eat on a particular body of water you will increase your odds of catching one! It is not very often that muskies are far from their food source. Now just because you find their food, doesn't mean you will see or catch a muskie, but you have increased your odds of success. In my opinion a 1% increase in my chances for success is a reason to be on the water!

Oh, I almost forgot the number one thing you need to catch muskies... A POSITIVE ATTITUDE!!! One thing all of the pro's have in common is an upbeat personality. Always staying the course and truly believing that it's going to happen will make it that much sweeter when you achieve your goals. I know how hard it can be at times, especially when you've put countless hours in and are beginning to wonder if there are muskies in the water at all! Just stick with it and believe that it will happen, because it will.

I hope this blog finds you in good cheer and I would like to extend a most joyous and Happy Thanksgiving (a.k.a. thunder chicken) Day to your family from mine.
