Wire vs. Fluorocarbon - The showdown!

I recently had a discussion with a buddy about which was better wire leaders or fluorocarbon. My answer is this; wire will never have a bite off, fluorocarbon can be bitten off, it is strong but it is possible. Fluorocarbon is susceptible to abrasion as well, however, wire has it's downfalls too.

Each type of leader has practical uses for different applications. For jerk-baits I have leaders that are stiff and offer a better action of the bait. On other baits I use regular wire leaders and fluorocarbon, of varying lengths. When trolling I typically use a 3-4 foot fluorocarbon leader.

Some people say that fluorocarbon is better than wire because of visibility. I haven't seen any studies to prove or disprove this. I will say that I personally don't think it matters. It has been my experience that most fish aren't line shy.

When I use wire leaders I use no less than 100 pound test. Using fluorocarbon I use no less than 130-150 pound test.

In my opinion I prefer a good steel leader, fluorocarbon has it's place for sure, but isn't my "go to" leader.

These are just my opinions and you may have your own. Grab a few of each, try them with different baits, and see what you like best.

Keep that lure in the water!
